POST 9/11
Dear business friends,
Someone intended to bring the United States to
its knees Tuesday. It didn't work. What happened instead is that
the world has been brought to its feet. Since the horrific events
in New York and Washington, I've had several people call and voice
their concern about the work environment and ask me about any pointers
to help their people and keep business moving.
During times of national tragedies, the work place
suffers. People have strong emotions ranging from fear to anger.
The issue is that people become side tracked and spend work time
talking about the news. There are things you can do to keep people
working efficiently.
As leaders, we need to remember not to assume the
role of Parent / Therapist. Emotions are rarely simple. People will
respond in very different ways to this event. The best thing you
can do is directly or
indirectly sanction discussions that allow people to air their feelings.
If you are holding meetings keep them scheduled.
Now is a time to come together, not to stay apart. Don't diminish
communication, encourage it! Schedule time for people to talk about
their feelings and thoughts.
- Kill fears with information and reassurance.
- Deal with the setbacks, face the new limitations
and spoiled plans. BUT,d o it with an optimistic demeanor and
an eye focused on the next steps beyond the crisis.
- Allow your people to collaborate on best solutions.
- Facilitate level headed dialogue.
- Be that voice of reason, that calm assurance
that your people need
right now.
We have enormous untapped strength. It lies in
the collective wisdom
and will of our people. As leaders , our job is always to keep hope,
perspective and resolve alive in our workplace and in our homes.
As a motivational coach, I have many ideas to help
keep everyone working
smoothly in this area. I'm available to help. My coaching services
are FREE over the next couple of weeks.
Regards,
Sandra
